    R: Hello, Brian.

    B: Hello.

R: I need to ask you some questions.

    B: Okay.

R: How long have you been in China?

B:I have been in China since August,27.2008.

R: Why did you choose to teach in China?

B: I wanted to teach somewhere different and China is such a changing country. So I thought it would be interesting.

R: So, have you adapted to Chinese customs?

B: Yes some, but some no. The yes is eating food, taking the bus, shopping. But my speaking and understanding are bad.

R: That’s true. And what about the work?

B:I enjoy it, that’s why I’m still here. In some ways it is very similar to teaching in Canada.

R: How do you feel about the students you teach?

B: I think Chinese students work too hard compared to western students. You don’t get to, enjoy a little bit of the years of your young life. You also, don’t have the opportunity to many things that students in the west get to enjoy.

R: What’s the difference of activity time between Canadian students and Chinese students?

B: Well…I will say that we usually like to play more different sports.

    R: Like what?

B: Hockey…baseball…basketball, but here, Yingcai students mostly only play basketball. Students can also learn different things in high schools in Canada. Boys, for example, get to learn how to fix cars, or other things such as woodwork or metalwork. The schools in the west teach academic for academic students. But also different practical things for students that are more interested in these other jobs.

R: Can you give some advice to Chinese students in studying and life?

B: I think the best advice I can give a Chinese student is that whatever you do in your studying, whatever you do in your life, you should always try to have many options for your future. So if you have many choices you have a chance for a more enjoyable life. If you only have one option, then you have to do that job even if you don’t like it.

R: What do you think the biggest problem for Chinese students?

    B: Biggest…problem…How they study English or…?

    R: How they study English?

B: I think when the Chinese student studies not just English but many of the subjects such as math and science, the, focus is mostly on memorization. Memorizing certain information is very important but so is being able to make practical use of that information.

R: How to solve this problem?

B: It’s not easy to solve the problems. Because the problems are really to the education system and the Chinese education system you can not change quickly. But it’s already happening the fact the Yingcai school has an International Center and the government is asking foreigners to teach. But having foreign teachers, that’s a start to making change. Changing doesn’t happen over night.

R: Thank you for your time!
